| Last year the Vol’s ripped off 35 consecutive points on their way to routing the Bears 35 - 18. A good friend of mine, who is a tremendous PAC-10 fan, was adamant regarding the importance of a victory and possible respect earned by the PAC. Careful what you wish for was my comment, as I knew that Tennessee was coming off of a disapointing season and was at a bit of a crossroads. With David Culpepper returning as offensive coodinator - Intensity and focus would be high in the off-season. Consequence? The Bears walked into a hornets nest as the game went sideways on Coach Jeff Tedford. This years game moves to Berkely. It looks to be an even draw, but I give the slight edge to the Vol’s as Ainge looks to be better than Longshore, and the Tennessee defense, specifically on the interior line - looks to have a bit more size and speed than the Bears. The hidden and often unreported aspect of the game that gives the edge to Tennessee is the travel. As a former collegiate and professional athlete, it was always harder to travel from west coast to east coast and compete. The mileage and the travel time is the same going from coast to coast, but you gain 3 hours coming east-to-west, and you lose three hours going west-to-east: Advantage Volunteers! However, If the Bears can get the early lead and gain the extra momentum from a ravenous crowd, who knows what may transpire.
This is an excellent game between two teams who should finish at the top of their respective conferences, and draws an A+ from the BCSBusters Report Card as an example of what teams should do with their non-conference opportunities. Everyone bemoans the BCS, but you have no excuses when you schedule Arkansas State, North Texas, Western Kentucky or Wofford. Kudo’s to the A.D.’s for putting together this Home-and-Home Series. |
