BCSBusters: SEC Week #1 Review

Week #1 Results:
The SEC Conference picked up where it left off last year with dominant victories in key non-conference games with the Big-12 Conference. Although there were a few match-ups with Division I-AA foes, the conference picked up some BCS style points by defeating Oklahoma State and Kansas State, two middle of the road programs from the heartland. Georgia’s defense looked particularly stout, limiting the Cowboys wide open offense to just two touchdowns, while Auburn’s defense kept its offense in the game long enough to execute two key scoring drives late in the game to earn a hard-fought, evenly contested victory over the Wildcats.
The jury is still out on the Razorbacks as Troy scored 27 points on the Hogs, but with Heisman candidate Darren McFadden at tailback, the Hogs are a sexy pick for the Top-25. I’m not sold on their linemen nor the offensive scheme to throw the ball down field, so as Arkansas enters SEC play, expect nine in the box - all keying on McFadden: Result - the Hogs will struggle to finish .500 in their division. I like LSU, Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi State and Mississippi (in that order) in the West. The East is a different story - it is loaded with four legitimate contenders in the division race. Take your pick between Florida, Georgia and Tennessee, although with Ainge’s broken pinky-finger, the Vol’s offense looks to hit another roadblock soon. They will have to rely on a defense that was shredded by the California Golden Bears, so much improvement is needed in Rocky-Top. Coach Fulmer might start hearing the noise from firecoachfulmer.com’s coming on the horizon if the ship doesn’t get righted in a hurry.
The key match-ups in the East may in fact come down to how the top three perform against Kentucky and South Carolina. Both look to be up-and-coming type programs who may make some noise by seasons end. If both teams get off to a hot start in conference play, they could be a conference contender or major spoiler!
Old Miss gets what it deserves for firing David Cutcliffe several season’s ago. Both Mississippi schools will fight over the egg by seasons end to keep themselves out of the toilet bowl ranking of the Bottom-10 in the country. Vandy is a notch above the Mississippi schools and just a notch below Kentucky and South Carolina. There are some excellent non-conference match-ups involving the SEC this coming weekend and a few programs begin SEC play. While fall is in the air, things are just starting to heat up in the South!
