Saturday Scoreboard: Big 12 Report
If there was any question about the USC Trojans, it was answered on their opening drive in front of a hostile Corn Nation.
Starting on their own three, the Men of Troy rumbled down the field in five plays, ripping off chunks of 50 and 40 yard at a time.
By the time the drive ended, Kirk Herbstreit and Brent Musburger were raving about how easy John Booty made the switch route look.
The Huskers began to settle down towards the end of the first quarter, with Keller executing the quick-strike aspects of West Coast scheme. Nebraska even managed to take a 10-7 lead into the second quarter…but it was all Trojans from there.
Oklahoma rolled again, blasting Utah State 54-3, while Texas struggled on the road in front of an amped crowd celebrating the opening of a new stadium for an ascendant Central Florida team.
Iowa State, meanwhile, saved some face for the conference after Oklahoma State’s loss to Troy by beating intrastate rival Iowa on a last second field goal.
By the way, how bad is the Big 10 this year? Ultimately not as bad as Notre Dame, who was embarrassed by Michigan.
So far this season, the BCS Grand Poobah has scored a woeful 16 points in three games, and lost its second string quarterback via defection to Northern Illinois.
Heading into conference play, Oklahoma is the Big 12’s only truly elite team. The jury is still out on Texas, while A&M was lucky to beat Fresno State last weekend—which doesn’t bode well for the conference, given Oregon’s dominating performance against the Bulldogs on Saturday.
Texas Tech continues to schedule the various old-time Southwest Conference programs—the Red Raiders beat traditional rival Rice this weekend. The wild card in the conference may be Missouri, who’s now 3-0 after narrow wins against BCS bottom-feeders Illinois and Mississippi.
On the whole, the Big 12 has been a gigantic disappointment in nonconference action.
