“The Conference of Champions”

The PAC-10 continues to impress this year, although Washington and UCLA had disappointing outcomes today - each suffering their first loss of the season. As we head into the opening weekend of conference play next weekend, the conference hierarchy is already evolving. USC was ultra impressive, considering SEC Nation was wagging the tail of the dog - connected to the BCS Controversy of course - after impressive wins by both Florida and LSU early in the season.
The Trojans did not disappoint as they bolted away from Corn Nation after a sluggish start. With Oregon and California both winning in outlandish fashion, the head of the PAC looks to be a four dog race, with Washington and UCLA as possible spoilers. USC and CAL are the elite, while Oregon and Arizona State are coming hard on the inside - it looks to be anyone’s race as the turnover factor will certainly bite once again.
UCLA committed enough self induced errors to last a season in their pitiful loss to the Utes, but I was never really high on the Bruins as I thought they were vastly over-rated in the pre-season. I just can’t seem to get excited about Carl Dorrel as the only thing you can truly count on with the Bruins is that they are consistently - inconsistent.
So far I have been correct on the majority of my pre-season polls, although I was surprised that Boston College beat Georgia Tech. There will be some considerable shuffling tomorrow afternoon in the polls. The contenders look to be USC, LSU, Oklahoma, Florida, West Virginia, California, Penn State and with the Buckeye’s stellar performance today, their back in the hunt!
And how bout the job that former Oregon coach Rich Brooks is doing at Kentucky. Considering he started with 10 less scholarships available during his first three years, it has been amazing to see their progress and the stunning directions that Louisville and Kentucky are headed - in opposite directions in less than a year.
Mike Stoops is in serious trouble in the desert after a rough start, losing two out of three, considering they were games they not only expected to win, but predicted to win. Unless that offense finds its piston in a hurry, Stoops may be unemployed for the Holiday’s. I’m sure he will find his way back to Norman as Oklahoma has been rocking - as hot as anyone in the country - in the first three weeks.
If Dennis Dixon wasn’t in the Heisman race to begin the season, he most certainly is now. After another impressive performance today against the nagging Bulldogs who have historically nipped at Oregon’s heels, the Ducks had their Harley reved up for this one - totally ambushing a Fresno team that shined in College Station last weekend.
Arizona State looks to be a team flying under the radar as they have been impressive during the early portion of the 2007 campaign. In looking at Florida State’s close contest this evening with Colorado, a team the Sun Devils blew out last weekend, the PAC-10 could be destined for great things unless the conference cannibalizes itself like last season when the teams were log jammed at the middle.
