I don’t like the teams you put in the “Rocky Mountain Conference”. Stretching from Hawai’i to Mississippi? That’s insane. I like another realignment I saw on a message board a few weeks ago. First, you take the WAC, drop La Tech to C-USA and drop Idaho to 1AA. After that, drop AF to independency. Next, take NM, NMSU, TCU, along with SMU, Rice, UTEP, Tulsa, and Houston from C-USA and N. Texas and Arky State from the Sun Belt to form a new Southwest conference. Now, take the remaining MWC and WAC teams and put them together. Viola! You have a powerful 12 team conference made up of teams existing in that BCS void in the rockies which can challenge any other BCS conference in football, b-ball, or any other sport. On top of that, you get a semi-powerful and very traditional recreation of the old southwest conference.
There are a million different ways to go about doing this conference realignment. The purpose of my realignment is to give the top tier mid-majors (non-BCS teams) a chance to square off head to head so we can see who the best non-BCS teams are to be included in the BCS Bracket.
There would really only be two travel games outside of the region as all the teams would play the teams in their division and then two cross over games with their sister division. I like the concept of the old southwest conference. As far as Hawaii playing a Mississippi school…isn’t this what is already occurring?
Hawaii played Alabama last year and L-Tech travels to Hawaii every other year. Conference realignment is really birds of a feather, but my realignment simply tries to solve the BCS equation with the LEAST amount of change. To get a better understanding read PART III of my playoff proposal to get a better feel how this would break down.
Appreciate the feedback.
Interesting alignments and information. I have prepared a realignment resulting in 10 12-team conferences. In general, it is simple to do, but I recommend changes based on geography, rather than better football schools ve. worst as in your scenario above. Doing it that way also allows for rival teams to end up in the same conference. The conference I eliminate is the Sun Belt (obvious I’m sure), and I use Conference USA as a gethering point for the new to FBS Florida based schools (Central Florida, South Florida FAU, and FIU). You ought to try it (without adding FCS schools) and see what you come up with.
I’d gladly email my revision to you. I have prepared it in an Excel file. It’s great to see other people thinking along these realignment lines to bust the BCS and get a try playoff system for Division 1-A college football. I have done this kind of thing for years!!!
I love your realignment idea. I think you make a couple of oversights with some of the geography and conferences, but otherwise, let’s get it done!
I would basically move the Mountain West “East Division” to the Conference USA “West Division” and move E. Carolina, UCF, Marshall, and Temple to the Big East.
The Mountain West, Conference USA, and Big East should look like this:
Mountain Division

Finally, the Sun Belt would just be the bottom-dweller’s conference. 10 teams broken into 2 divisions. Each team plays 4 intra-divisional games and 4 games against the other division (only fails to play one conference team each season).

Disagree,
I think Army and Navy should be a part of the Big-East since the majority of the teams play these programs every year anyway. E. Carolina and Appalachian State bring more to the table than Temple or Marshall, which should continue to play in either the MAC or C-USA.
You make a strong argument for Central Florida over Appalachian State which I could see if Appy didn’t want to step up to the plate and play with the Big-Boys.
I like UCF in C-USA.
